Mammoet partners with Esta on "best practices" for SPMTs

Mammoet has worked with Esta to establish new stability guidelines for self-propelled modular trailers (SPMT) when transporting heavy and bulky loads.

Mammoet was already part of ESTA's first SPMT working group in 2016, which created a "best practice guide for SPMT operations". A second, larger working group was then formed to take up this guide and develop it further. Ludo Mous, Mammoet's Director of European Operations, is leading the project. With over 30 years' experience in the industry, he has seen the market evolve and is passionate about improving SPMT training and safety.

In October 2023, ESTA published new guidelines on trailer stability, which will be referenced in the upcoming first revision of DNV ST-N001 Maritime Operations Standard, published by insurance and risk management experts DNV.

The basic principle of these guidelines is a calculated approach," explains Ludo Mous. Previous guidelines were based on a measured stability method. This new method involves calculating stability taking into account dynamic factors such as braking, acceleration, wind, road inclination, etc."
