Mammoet: 360° safety on mobile cranes

Mammoet, in collaboration with Rietveld, a specialist in fleet management and vehicle and machine safety systems, is testing several devices to enhance safety when moving and maneuvering mobile cranes. The project combines three different technologies which are currently being tested on one of its new 70-tonne Liebherr LTM 1070-4.2 mobile cranes.
Firstly, Rietveld's OmniVue 360° camera system, which, with a combination of cameras installed on the crane chassis, generates real-time images of the vehicle. The driver has a 360-degree view from inside and outside the cab, enabling him to see what pedestrians and other road users see. Next, a series of sensors detect people and obstacles within an adjustable safety radius around the crane. In the event of potential danger, an acoustic signal alerts the driver, and an LED light panel also displays the section of the crane where movement has been detected.

Finally, the last device, christened "Halo", traces a luminous boundary on the ground around the crane, giving nearby people a clear visual indication of the safe zone around it. This is particularly useful on construction sites where hearing protection is required. This limit can be switched on and off manually, and switches off automatically above a certain speed.
