Mercedes-Benz Trucks unveils its long-haul electric tractor unit

The eActros 600 is the new heavy-duty electric truck from Mercedes-Benz Trucks, capable of driving 500 km on its 600 kWh batteries without intermediate charging. The batteries can be charged from 20% to 80% in around 30 minutes at a charging station with a capacity of around one megawatt. In addition to this tractor version, Mercedes-Benz Trucks will also be producing rigid variants of the eActros 600 once it is launched on the market, offering customers further application possibilities for all-electric transport. A fleet of around fifty prototype vehicles is currently under construction, some of which will be tested by the first customers in the next phase. The new eActros 600 has been designed to meet the same requirements as combustion-powered vehicles, i.e. up to 1.2 million kilometers in ten years of operation. It features a new 800-volt electric axle with two electric motors and a four-speed gearbox, specially designed for heavy haulage over long distances. With an adapted and anticipatory driving style, electrical energy can be recovered and fed back into the eActros 600's batteries, then made available again.

Series production end 2024

Mercedes-Benz Trucks has developed two power take-offs for the eActros 600. The electromechanical PTO, for example, can be used to operate hydraulic or mechanical work equipment such as tipping, scraper or silo trailers. Another solution is the DC or AC electric PTO. In the latter case, an inverter converts direct current from the high-voltage grid into alternating current, for refrigerated bodies or refrigerated semi-trailers, for example. Various PTO applications cover a power range from 22 to 90 kW, to suit all common applications.
Sales of the electric truck will begin this year, and series production is scheduled to start at the end of 2024.
Mercedes-Benz Trucks' overall concept for electric long-distance transport is based on a total solution comprising vehicle technology, consulting, recharging infrastructure and services.
