Mammoet tests its giant crane in electric mode

Mammoet has just completed all-electric operation tests on its SK6000 giant crane. This ultra-powerful crane confirms its ability to operate with zero emissions and reduced noise. The tests were carried out using two 600 kWh battery packs from power supply specialist Bredenoord, connected in series to supply 1,200 kWh - roughly the output of 20 electric cars.
The SK600 can be connected to a medium-voltage grid, often available in heavy industry. In port facilities, so-called "shore power" connections, generally used to prevent cargo ships from idling in port, are capable of powering the crane. Finally, battery functionality offers another option, with the added advantage of being able to be recharged from weaker power grids. The time not worked between each ring crane lift allows the batteries to recharge. Hydrogen generators can be used where mains or battery power is not an option, for example on remote sites with no major infrastructure.
