Daimler announces real-life testing of hydrogen-powered trucks

In mid-May 2024, Daimler Truck will start the first customer trials of its fuel cell trucks, the Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Truck. 5 tractors will be deployed for the transport of the Amazon, Air products, Ineos, Holcim and Wiedmann &Winz groups. They will be used for a variety of applications, on specific routes in Germany, such as transporting building materials, shipping containers or bottled gas. During this period, they will remain under the direct supervision and responsibility of Mercedes-Benz Trucks. They will be refueled with hydrogen at public liquid hydrogen filling stations in the Duisburg area.

John H. Landwehr, whose logistics company Gerdes + Landwehr is part of the Holcim Group, plans to transport granulates and minerals for the building materials industry with the Mercedes-Benz GenH2 truck. He explains: "Payload has always played an important role in our bulk logistics in terms of CO2 footprint and efficiency. After extensive trials with battery-electric trucks, we're delighted to continue exploring the path of sustainable transport with a hydrogen-powered truck. Only with our specific experience will we be able to make the right decisions for the change that will begin in 2025 in our group of companies."

The Mercedes-Benz GenH2 trucks used for these initial tests offer a payload of around 25 tonnes for a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 40 tonnes. Two special liquid hydrogen tanks and a fuel cell system enable this high payload and long range.
