Kalmar and Transnet Port Terminals strengthen their sustainability partnership

Kalmar, a specialist in port handling solutions, has signed a new agreement with Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) for the supply of 16 hybrid straddle carriers for the Cape Town and Port Elizabeth container terminals. The order, booked in the fourth quarter of 2025, will be delivered by the second quarter of 2026.

TPT, a subsidiary of South Africa's Transnet Group, operates 16 marine terminals across the country. The company is gradually modernizing its fleet of equipment to improve the energy efficiency of its operations. The 16 hybrid units, a first in southern Africa, will reduce fuel consumption, noise and CO₂ emissions. Twelve units will be assigned to the Port Elizabeth terminal and four to the Cape Town terminal.

" These machines will support our efforts towards cleaner, more efficient operations ," emphasizes Dean Moodley, Director of Capital Projects at TPT.
For Kalmar, this agreement is part of a long-standing cooperation. " We support TPT in the transition to more sustainable and cost-effective materials handling ," explains Karri Keskinen, Kalmar's Global Sales Manager for horizontal transport.
