Framatome focuses on the fuel of the future at Romans-sur-Isère

Framatome is stepping up the pace of nuclear innovation with the creation of a pilot line dedicated to the development of TRISO fuel at its Romans-sur-Isère site. Already active in the United States, the company is now extending its capabilities in France to support advanced reactor projects, particularly high-temperature reactors (HTRs).

This new-generation fuel, composed of uranium particles protected by layers of ceramic and carbon, is recognized for its exceptional safety and resistance to extreme temperatures. The future line will enable us to qualify manufacturing and testing processes, a key step towards industrialization in France.

"We're proud to be strengthening our national expertise and supporting innovation in advanced fuels," says Lionel Gaiffe, Senior Executive Vice President of Framatome's Fuel Business Unit.

As part of the France 2030 plan, Framatome has also signed an agreement in principle with start-up Blue Capsule Technology to jointly develop and qualify TRISO fuel for their HTR reactors.

With this project, Framatome confirms its leading role in innovative and sustainable nuclear power.
