Sofatrans decarbonizes quarry transport

Three electric FMX trucks from Volvo Trucks are deployed at the Gypse quarry in Maurienne (73) by Sofatrans, on behalf of Sogyma, the quarry operator. These vehicles transport gypsum extracted from the quarry and destined for the Placo plant in Chambéry, either to the Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne railway station, where it is then loaded onto trains, or directly to customers by truck. The new trucks each cover an average of 80 km a day. "We are now the first quarry to use carbon-free transport, from extraction to the end customer, which is fully in line with our continuous improvement approach, recognized and certified by the ISO 14001 environmental standard", explains Anthony Aubert, Operations Manager at the Gypse de Maurienne quarry.
The 1.2 million euro investment was supported by ADEME to provide the infrastructure required for the efficient operation of electric vehicles. These three new electric trucks complete Sofatrans' fleet of 13 100% rapeseed biofuel vehicles and 25 latest-generation combustion-powered vehicles. They are used in a wide range of activities, including ski lifts, public works tippers, industry, heavy haulage, lifting and flatbed transport.
