Manitowoc launches two new hybrid mobile cranes

The Manitowoc Group presents its first Grove Plug-in Hybrid mobile cranes, the GMK5150L-1e and GMK5150XLe, at Bauma. They feature a 150-ton lifting capacity and a new, fully electrified superstructure.

The technology is based on that of the GMK4100L-2 hybrid concept presented in Munich 3 years ago. The battery pack enables emission-free lifting operations for around 5 hours. Operation of the crane, when connected to the mains, can be extended to around 20 hours.
Both cranes can be recharged from the mains (AC or DC), or using a 170 kW generator built into the carrier. This generator enables the battery to be recharged while the crane is on the move, reducing the need for a recharging infrastructure.

Identical performance

They can be driven to the job site using renewable HVO fuel to power their Mercedes-Benz engine, reducing carbon emissions by up to 90% while simultaneously charging the batteries," says Florian Peters, Senior Product Manager for self-propelled road cranes at Manitowoc. Secondly, they can be configured to use clean electricity to carry out lifting tasks. Noise pollution is also enormously reduced, a considerable advantage when working in city centers."

These hybrid cranes retain all their performance features: the 60 m main boom on the GMK5150L-1e and the 68.7 m main boom on the GMK5150XLe are identical to those of the diesel models, as are their load charts. The MEGATRAK independent suspension system with disc brakes is retained. They are also equipped with Manitowoc's CSS (Crane Control System) with boom configuration mode, as well as the MAXbase flexible positioning system.
