Hydrogen: TotalEnergies continues to decarbonize the La Mède platform

TotalEnergies and Air Liquide are launching a project for a renewable hydrogen production unit on the La Mède platform (Bouches-du-Rhône).

The unit, built and operated by Air Liquide, will produce 25,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen a year by valorizing the biorefinery's co-products. This hydrogen will be used to manufacture biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). The project, estimated at 150 million euros, is due to come on stream in 2028.

This initiative is in addition to the Masshylia project, carried out with ENGIE, which produces green hydrogen by electrolysis. This will see a 20 MW electrolyser operational by 2029, subject to subsidies and authorizations, to contribute to regional decarbonization. "Nearly ten years after the announcement of its conversion, the La Mède platform is continuing its transformation and becoming a low-carbon hydrogen production center, thereby contributing to the decarbonization objectives of the Provence-Alpes-Côte-D'Azur region," said Vincent Stoquart, President of TotalEnergies' Refining & Chemicals business.
