New rotary forklifts, the new electric Teletruk and artificial intelligence... A look back at three major innovations in materials handling, previewed and demonstrated by JCB at its Rocester site in central England.
The rotary forklift range has been strengthened with two new models, both with increased capacities. The all-new 558-210 R Pro and 558-260R Pro reach a maximum capacity of 5.8 tonnes, with lifting heights of 21 and 26 m respectively. The Stage V-compliant JCB Dieselmax engine fitted to these models delivers 112 kW (150 hp). The new remote control displays all important information on its screen, such as load charts and fuel consumption. And when you say rotary, you say versatility of use: numerous accessories are compatible (forks, winches, boom and job, basket...). The new JCB Clearview Q-Fit carriage recognizes equipment by RFID, making it easier to change attachments.
At the other end of the range, the Teletruk, a compact telescopic boom forklift, comes in a new electric High Lift version, with 4.4 m lifting height. Its maximum capacity of 3 tonnes is identical at all lift heights, including maximum. At a horizontal reach of 2 m, it still achieves a capacity of 2.2 tonnes.
AI boosts safety
When it comes to telescopic forklift trucks, AI is now helping to improve safety on construction sites. JCB has developed "IntelliSense", its own AI-based pedestrian detection camera system, to reduce the risk of accidents. The system is initially being installed on two market-leading models, the 540-140 (4 tonnes, 14m) and the JCB 535-125, (3.5 tonnes, 12.5m) to meet the demands of large UK companies. This is the first factory-integrated system on trucks. It comprises four cameras, three of which are Artificial Intelligence (two side-mounted and one rear-facing), providing a 270° scan of the truck's environment.
